Choosing natural stone for hotel and commercial projects

In hotels, restaurants and offices, stone has to look right on day one and still work after years of heavy use and daily cleaning. Matching the stone and its finish to each area matters more than the stone’s name.

Start from the area, not the stone

List each area with its use: lobby floor, reception desk, guest bathroom vanity, restaurant tabletops, decorative wall, amenity trays. For each one note the traffic, contact with water, oils or acids, and the cleaning routine the operator will use.

High-traffic floors and wet areas need a different stone and finish than a feature wall or a decorative object seen at arm’s length.

Finish matters as much as the stone

Polished surfaces show colour and veining at their strongest but also show wear paths and etching sooner. Honed or brushed finishes hide traces of use better and are usually preferred for busy floors.

For floors, check slip resistance requirements in your project’s specification and local rules, especially near entrances, pools and bathrooms, and choose the finish accordingly.

Typical choices by area

Lobbies and reception: marble or travertine for desks and walls; onyx — often backlit — for a feature element rather than for heavily used surfaces.

Guest bathrooms: marble or filled travertine for vanities and walls, with a sealer and housekeeping instructions that avoid acidic cleaners.

Restaurants and bars: stone tabletops and serving pieces need attention to stains and acids; discuss finish and sealing for each product, and confirm suitability for food contact where relevant.

Rooms and suites: smaller stone objects — trays, bowls, lamps, amenity sets — bring the material into the room with little maintenance risk.

Consistency across many units

A hotel project repeats the same item across dozens or hundreds of rooms. Natural stone varies from block to block, so agree up front how much variation is acceptable and how it will be checked — for example a reference sample and production photos approved before packing.

Order spare units for replacements; a later batch may come from a different block.

Information to prepare for a quotation

Drawings or reference images, dimensions and tolerances, finish, quantity per item, delivery schedule (all at once or in phases), delivery location and any project specification for stone. The more of this is ready, the more precise the quotation.
